Why have faith?

Why believe?

At different points in life, we ask questions that nothing we own, achieve, or master can fully answer: Why am I here? What is the meaning of my life? How do I love truly? Why suffering? What happens to us after death?

Christian faith doesn’t replace reason or science. It opens a wider horizon. It invites us to discover that our lives are not an accident, that we are known and loved by God, and that our existence carries a calling.

Believing doesn’t mean understanding everything, or never doubting again. Faith is a free response to a God who makes himself known, above all in Jesus Christ. It grows through prayer, reflection, encounter, the sacraments, and life within a community.

“The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God.”

Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 27

In everyday life, faith can help us to:

  • Look at our lives with hope, even in the midst of uncertainty;
  • Recognize the dignity of every person;
  • Make choices guided by truth and charity;
  • Get through hardship without believing we’re alone in it;
  • Find a community to pray, celebrate, and serve alongside.
