{"id":7776,"date":"2023-03-27T10:51:26","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T14:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diocesemontreal.wp.vortexdev.com\/en\/news\/news-2\/statement-regarding-closure-roxham-road\/"},"modified":"2023-03-27T10:51:26","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T14:51:26","slug":"statement-regarding-closure-roxham-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diocesemontreal.wp.vortexdev.com\/en\/news\/news-2\/statement-regarding-closure-roxham-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Statement regarding the closure of Roxham Road"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"text-align-center\">March 24, 2023 &#8211;&nbsp;<strong>Le Pont (Diocese of Montreal) &#8211; Foyer du Monde &#8211; Latraverse <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-center\"><em>Shelters for asylum seekers in Montreal <\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">The hasty closure of Roxham Road, an irregular entry point for asylum seekers into Canada, is a <strong>mistake<\/strong>, as it is not accompanied by <strong>any lasting and dignified solution <\/strong>for the protection of migrants and refugees.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">Closing Roxham Road is simply <strong>displacing the problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">It <strong>criminalizes<\/strong> asylum seekers who seek to protect their lives and the lives of their families.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">It is enriching the smugglers and developing a cruel and inhumane<em> business model.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">It is encouraging human beings to take even more dangerous, even <strong>deadly<\/strong>, routes.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">Playing &#8220;cat and mouse&#8221; for 14 days means putting entire families in danger, <strong>making them precarious to the point of<\/strong> <strong>human dignity<\/strong>, pushing them to the very edge of the health, social services and immigration systems.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">It is <strong>playing with the life of every human being <\/strong>who has already braved the risks and borders of several transitory countries.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><strong>It is suspending the inalienable right to asylum.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">Closing a border or unofficial ports of entry has never &#8220;solved&#8221; immigration &#8220;problems\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><strong>Entry is not the source of the problem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">Asylum seekers, in their uniqueness and human integrity, <em><strong>are not<\/strong><\/em><strong> the problem. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">The Safe Third Country Agreement is an administrative, judicial and political (outdated) arrangement <strong>in the face of human issues<\/strong>, lives at risk.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">This decision is felt as an <strong>abandonment<\/strong>.
