\n\u201cCatechists have an invaluable mission for the transmission and growth of the faith,\u201d says Pope Francis in The Pope Video for December.<\/p>\n\n

Each month, the Pope\u2019s Worldwide Prayer Network <\/a>prepares The Pope Video, in which the Holy Father reveals his special prayer intentions for that month.<\/p>\n\n

For December 2021, the Pope is praying \u201cfor the catechists, summoned to announce the Word of God: may they be its witnesses, with courage and creativity and in the power of the Holy Spirit, with joy and much peace.\u201d

\nA vocation and a mission<\/strong>
\n
\nIn his video message, Pope Francis says, \u201cThe lay ministry of catechist is a vocation; it\u2019s a mission\u2026 It\u2019s an entire way of being.\u201d He said the Church needs \u201cgood catechists who are both companions and teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Earlier this year, Pope Francis formally restored the lay ministry of catechists with the Apostolic Letter Antiquum ministerium<\/em><\/a>, issued \u201cmotu proprio,\u201d or on his own initiative. In this month\u2019s video, the Pope explains that even today, \u201cin many dioceses, on many continents, evangelization is fundamentally in the hands of a catechist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Proclaiming the Gospel with their lives<\/strong>

\nSo, he said, the Church needs \u201ccreative people who proclaim the Gospel, but who proclaim it neither with a mute nor with a loudspeaker, but rather with their life, with gentleness, with a new language, and opening new ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

An example of this \u201cnew language\u201d for catechesis is seen in The Pope Video for December, which shows catechists and young people working together on a mural representing the washing of feet.

\nAn elegant gesture<\/strong>
\n
\nIn his message, Pope Francis invites the faithful to \u201cthank catechists for the interior enthusiasm with which they live this mission at the service of the Church.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Fr Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Fornos, S.J., International Director of the Pope\u2019s Worldwide Prayer Network, commented on this month\u2019s intention: \u201cFrancis dedicating this last message to catechists in the same year in which he instituted their lay ministry and in which the synodal journey began \u2018as the pilgrim and missionary People of God\u2019 is an eloquent gesture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
